Anyone looking for an EJ with intact head gaskets? There’s a chance the ones in this Outback are still good!

No, this is not another Craigslist ad where the seller forgot a couple of digits at the end of the odometer reading and a one or two in front. This 12-year-old Outback is still officially not broken in with 613 miles.

According to the CarFax , this car has lived a very long life of sitting. It arrived on the dealer’s lot in North Carolina on June 6 th , 2008 and was purchased three months later on September 4 th , 2008.

It proceeded to rack up an astounding 33 miles per year until its first service eight years after it left the dealer lot. On October 26 th , 2016, the Outback returned home where the ECM was reprogramed by the same dealer at 355 miles.

Only two and a half years later, this car had gained 257 more miles, bringing its total to 612 miles. In this time, it put on almost 103 miles per year— over triple its previous annual mileage. The last mile was added by the dealer, which leads us to now.

My best guess is that this was owned by a retiree that lived one mile from all surrounding grocery stores, restaurants, and church. T his could’ve also been someone’s 25 th car which they parked and lost for a bit . Maybe it was someone’s dream to buy a new Outback and keep it in show room condition to become a collector car.

The previous o wner did consistently register this Outback every year, so they were sure it was ready to put on its annual allocation of 33 miles at any time .

Intentionally or not, they treated this Outback like a classic Ferrari and created a museum piece as a result.

It looks like the stalks have never been touched.

It for sure needs a timing belt if it’s going to be driven. If I were wealthy and had the space I’d buy it and park it. That would make an odd barn find in ~30 years.

Unless it got one done at a shop that didn’t record to CarFax, it looks like it went almost 12 years without an oil change! The first one on the CarFax was when this dealer got it in March!

Sir, I’ve got the dossier — the couple retired from New Jersey to Florida in 2003, but two hurricane seasons scared them off to North Carolina. They underestimated the hipster culture of Asheville before they moved there, so in order to fit into the 1930s Craftsman neighborhood with most residents half their age, the husband grew a mustache and learned to play the dulcimer . They had purchased this Subaru to park on the street as something of a lawn ornament, but less than a month later the husband had a terrible unicycle accident on his front porch. He spent years in rehab, during which point they forgot they owned the car. The bank continued to process the automatic payments, so eventually they owned it outright.

When they both passed away last year, their estate attorney informed me that the house was worth over a million dollars, with the Outback not far behind that.
